About This Songwright
If you’re wandering through the Southwest Missouri music scene, you’re bound to cross paths with Caleb Miller, the mastermind behind the Vagabond Grove moniker. A Joplin staple for over 15 years, Caleb doesn’t just play songs; he curates what he calls “Esoteric Grooves.” It’s a sonic cocktail that’s one part dusty Americana, one part smooth jazz, and a healthy splash of indie rock, all shaken up into something that feels both nostalgic and totally out of left field.
Whether he’s flying solo with an acoustic guitar or leading his band, The Drifting Heads, Caleb’s discography is a roadmap of musical curiosity. He kicked things off with the appropriately titled Eclecticism in 2020 and followed it up with the 2023 deep-dive Simple Problems For Complex Solutions. Most recently, he’s been dropping singles like “Friends” and “They Said It’d Be Fun,” proving that his creative engine is nowhere near empty. He even has a trophy on the shelf for “Alien Xmas,” a track that conquered the Joplin Toad Sci-Fi Christmas challenge by being just the right amount of weird.
When he isn’t touring the Midwest or Southwest, you can usually find him being the heartbeat of the Joplin arts community. From the stalls of the Empire Market to the cozy corners of Zinc Coffee and JBs Clubhouse, Caleb is a fixture of the local “Storyteller” circuit. He’s the kind of artist who reminds you that you don’t need a big-city zip code to produce world-class vibes, you just need a guitar, a vision, and a little bit of that vagabond spirit.
